Happy New Year!

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 2:01 PM
Last week I found myself in the mood to re-read [info]harriet_vane's Star Shaped, which is something of a holiday must-read, and this week I got yet another delightful seasonal treat.

Hand Me Down, by [info]reni_days - Spencer/Brendon pre-slash. This story is told with so much honesty and yet so much irrepressible optimism, the focus on looking ahead and keeping your chin up and doing what you can rather than wallowing in your own misery and letting depression drag you down, which I truly believe in as a life philosophy, and I think Brendon would be with me there. It's absolutely heart-warming. Happy holidays to bandom. ♥

Happy Winter Solstice and a Blessed New Year to those who celebrate, and winter greetings to those who do not. Best wishes to all and their loved ones on this day and throughout the year to come. May you achieve your goals, discover more about yourself, and grow as a person for the better. Blessed Be.

2009 Television I Watched!

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 5:41 PM
So as the year draws to a close, I thought I might talk about the television I have watched during it, and hear about other people's television. I have noticed that my year's viewing has a common theme - one of my favourite themes. Sensible Girls, and the Romantic Boys Who Love Them.

One thing I watched was the second season of Merlin. I have written up my thoughts on season one Merlin here.

MERLIN SEASON TWO

ARTHUR: My new contract states I must be shirtless at least once an episode.
GWEN: Now I am going to be a love interest, I am looking extremely foxy in several new gowns. I am never shirtless, because this is the BBC.
MERLIN: Nobody fed me over the summer, and I am feeling weak.
MORGANA: Nobody gave me any lines for the upcoming season, and I am feeling evil.

Merlin Season Two, continued )

Since I am devoted to L.J. Smith, who at sixteen was my Twilight, I was certain to watch The Vampire Diaries. I saw the pilot at Comic Con, and was hugely delighted to see that the hero and heroine wrote their sad, sad diaries sadly in sync.

Then I saw more, and I have been most excellently pleased by it!

Vampire Diaries so far )

My flatmates and I bought the box set of Bones and watched it together, drinking cups of hot chocolate with ice-cream in them.

SARAH: I dunno. I love Partners Who Fight Crime an awful lot, but I'm just not sure I can take FBI Agent Angel.
DR BRENNAN: I am a lady who would rather poke around in human soup with bones floating in it than think about her feelings! Also I enjoy casual relationships and am bad at being charming.
FBI AGENT ANGEL: I am pretty good at being charming, and I am in touch with my feelings. I am not as smart as you but I am totally comfortable with not being a crazy genius!
DR BRENNAN AND FBI AGENT ANGEL: Together we goofily fight crime.
SARAH: The truest loves are found through goofily fighting crime. NEXT BOX SET PLEASE.

In summary, I love Sensible Girls and the Romantic Boys Who Love Them. I also love things that are kind of ridiculous. What kind of thing do you love?
1.  Day 10 → A photo of you taken over ten years ago

Prom 1999.

That's me on the left there.  My friend Kristen posted this on Facebook.  Apparently my scanner doesn't work with OS X (WHICH IS FABULOUS, THANKS APPLE, THAT WAS SUPER HELPFUL) so you are missing out on some classic baby Melissa.  Instead you get this GEM of a prom picture.  No, I do not know what possessed me to do my hair this way.  No, I do not know what possessed me to wear that dress (this was the Year of the Fluffy Princess Dress, and I was in some slinky black jersey thing with white flowers and my great-grandmother's costume jewelry?).

That's our friend Di in the middle and Miss Kellypants on the right, looking lovely in an ice-blue dress that didn't come out very well in this picture.  Kelly was my date, and we had QUITE a lovely time at our senior prom.  Afterward, we went to her house and watched the season finales of The Pretender and The Profiler.  Oh, wee geeky us.  Also, we got lost in this crazy, creepy fog on the way home, while a creepy Elvis song was on the radio and we were driving through a creepy forest AND THERE WAS A CEMETERY.  We were like "Hey, how many horror movies involve teenage girls in prom dresses?" and then we were like "OH JESUS, LOTS OF THEM," and Kelly gunned it (which for her is like 40mph).

Alternately, this is from my aunt Michelle.  Me and my cousin Matt, circa 1991.  We are making nerdface (™ MY DAD).

How cute is Matt?  He is now a super-jaded war veteran attending West Point, so it is quite funny to look back and see how fuzzy and sweet he was at age 6.  But he is so definitely a relative of mine, because check out this face.

Actually, this only reminds me how impossible it is to get a nice picture of me.  I am almost always doing something stupid or making a dumb face.  That is how the Frantic family rolls.

2.  Rec: Karaoke, Sport of Kings, by SOMEBODY WHOSE NAME LIVEJOURNAL REFUSES TO ALLOW ME TO TYPE.  I have tried eleven times now to fix this and livejournal just will not allow it, deleting everything in between points 2 and 3, so I've given up.  So if you're DYING of curiosity as to who the author is, just go through the link.  Seriously, DIAF, livejournal.

3.  Oh, [info]fandomsecrets .  Watch Melissa get annoyed anonymously.  Watch Melissa decide anonymous posting is stupid.  Watch Melissa get involved in a conversation about misogyny with a dumbass.  Watch Melissa lose her temper

I know it's impossible for you to read my mind, wee f-list, but if you could, do you think it's possible to just sort of yank me away from the internet when I start getting involved in conversations about misogynistic language?  It's like I can't help myself.  There's some sort of warning bell that goes off and my brain goes MUST GET INVOLVED and then most people don't want to hear that noise and I get angry because it pisses me off when people put fingers in their ears and go LALALA THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS MISOGYNY IF I SAY SO and then I end up telling somebody to go fuck themselves with a pitchfork AND GOOD STAY IGNORANT THEN YOU STUPID PIG FUCKER and yeah.  It never ends well, people, never.

4.  cuteboyishlesbiangirls.  Who spent like two hours on this website not too long ago?  THIS GUY.  Mr. Boyfriend was like, "Hey, what kind of girls do you like, then?"  He was sort of weirded out by the whole idea of us possibly liking the same type of woman, but has warmed up to it quite a bit, and thinks he has my taste all sorted.  Which he doesn't, but that's okay.  I am not into the super-super boyish girls, just the ones with the cute spunky haircuts and distinctive dressing styles.  All he really needs to know is that no matter how cute she is, I will always hate Jenny from The L Word.  Seriously, shut up, Jenny.

ETA:  5. LJ, you fail spectacularly.  Please stop randomly deleting my words, line breaks, and other html that is necessary to form a coherent entry.  Also, when I save something?  Please save it the way I wrote it, instead of going back to what was there before.
Hooboy, the choices are getting difficult!

Leaving the Winners' Bracket for having trauma that is not quite the most unspeakable: Dean Winchester, Fox Mulder, Wesley Wyndham-Price, Tony DiNozzo, Rodney McKay, Parker, Ken Hutchinson, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Leaving the Losers' Bracket for being emo kids who cannot be cheered up: Ryan Atwood, Eliot Spencer, Brendon Urie, Ianto Jones, Methos, Bodie, Horatio Hornblower, and Jim Ellison.

Top Eight Winners' Finalists (Unspeakable Trauma!):

1. Severus Snape (Harry Potter) - 91.4%
2. Harry Potter - 89.6%
3. Lex Luthor - 75.0%
4. Draco Malfoy - 74.5%
5. Daniel Jackson - 70.9%
6. Jim Kirk - 66.0%
7. Xander Harris - 54.3%
8. Alex Krycek - 50.5%

Bottom Eight Losers' Finalists (Cheer Up, Emo Kid!):

1. Spock (Star Trek (2009)) - 28.1%
2. Han Solo - 30.0%
3. Jess Mariano (Gilmore Girls) - 30.6%
4. Arthur Pendragon (Merlin) - 31.6%
5. Vin Tanner (Magnificent Seven) - 39.8%
6. Ray Vecchio (Due South) - 40.2%
7. Ezra Standish (Magnificent Seven) - 40.3%
8. Seamus Harper (Andromeda) - 48.1%

And remember, you're always free to vote against someone whose fanon childhood trauma you find substandard. Now, on to the polls!

I still have 5 Dw invites. I'm a little pissed that one of the last five was used to create a spam account that has since been deleted. Also, I forgot to mention last time, these are from my [personal profile] 20dollar account, which will one day be my music, TV show, and movie sharing account. Sorry for the confussion.

Also, if anyone wants to ask anything about Dw, feel free. I may not know the answer, but one of my reading list might.

This weekend was epic. On my way up to Auckland for Green Day on Saturday I was pulled over for speeding. I was also then found to have an expired registration (12/12/09), a restricted license with a passenger (not allowed passengers), and 2 outstanding parking fines. Luckily he only gave me a warning for the rego, and the restricted license fines have come down from NZ$400 to NZ$100. Speeding was $170 and 35 demerits.

Got to Auckland. Picked up tickets and shopped for a bit. Green Day was awesome, but my back was hurting so much by the end I was ready to go home. Not as much fun as My Chem or Panic, but def endertaining. Billie Joe is great doing acoustic.

Saw Avatar. I was not as blown away as I expected to be. Possibly the 3D was too distracting? Needs more viewings.

Sunday avo all my workmates came around for BBQ and drinks. That was lots of fun talking about every topic under the sun. Great times, will have to do again.

Tired now, fic to read (so much Brencer Show, omnomnom).

I am house-sitting for [info]woolly_socks and [info]vaudevilles, which means looking after the biggest most wonderfully cuddly cat, Neville. ♥

I am also getting to enjoy woolly's room and set up. I can lie in bed with a wireless mouse & keyboard, watch stuff and lj and email FROM BED! It is the best thing ever! :D

Also, thanks to her downloads, I have caught up on all of 'White Collar', 'The Big Bang Theory', and the last two 'Doctor Who' specials.

I am now pondering actually watching the last Torchwood mini-series, 'Children of Earth'. (Which I always see as CoE - which just makes me think of Church of England, which makes me think of Eddie Izzard, but anyway...)

Guys, I have been denying the existence of it ever being made, 'cause I've been spoiled, and I know there's something in there that is really going to break my heart. I've heard it's good anyway? Should I just bite the bullet aka drink a bottle of wine, and watch?

  • ratcreature: random poll - if you've been in fandom a long(-ish) time, do you ever feel nostalgia for fandom how it used to be? ("Fandom" in this case intentionally vague as I just mean whatever form of fandom you were involved in the era you are nostalgic for.) And if so, for which time period? -

  • katta: Some clues on how not to write deaf characters - The disability fanfic site has uploaded a bunch of stuff, so I've been reading quite a lot, and there are a couple of things that bother me. -

  • box_in_the_box: WHY SUPERHERO COMIC BOOK CREATORS SHOULD NOT INTERACT WITH FANDOM: - It occurs to me that what we have here is a microcosm of the exact same sort of tension between entertainment media producers and consumers as exists in just about any other genre or medium now, in which the whole movement toward "the author is dead" has inspired a backlash from the authors themselves, who aren't content with telling stories so much as they want the power to dictate how their audiences should react to their works. -

  • sailorptah: Sigh. - But other times? Other times the discussion, while it may have started in a fannish place, has left that context behind long ago. Which means that, unless you were involved with it from the beginning, it boils down to this: "People you have no connection to (except that you both use the same blogging service, and/or enjoy watching TV and writing about it) said something which sounds like it was ill-advised (although you can't say for certain, because until five minutes ago you were not even aware this conversation had taken place) and now you get to hear a deconstruction of why they were wrong." -
    (tags: fandom meta)

  • cupidsbow: meta twitter? - Maybe all the huge discussions of the last two years have actually changed the face of meta, because we feel more comfortable in just using that language and making short comments, rather than having to scale up our meta thoughts into full-blown essays. -
    (tags: meta fandom)

  • [info]crabapplered: Metafandom needs to re-evaluate. - The point is, if someone wants to talk about the mechanics of chakra in Naruto, they don't really want people to pop up and go "pft! Chakra! Now there's some fine cultural appropriation in that series" -
    (tags: fandom)

  • rubyfruit_pixie: Also I Am A Horrible, Horrible Person (And That's Okay). - And I can think and squee at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive, and I really wish people would stop thinking that they are. -
    (tags: discussions)

  • renay: PSA to Emerging FFXIII Fans: Don't Do Racist Shit! - If these are the actions and behavior I have to look forward to from fans of Final Fantasy XIII, so help me, I am going to explode in rage on a near-daily basis. I mean, this is Racism 101 stuff. -

  • renay: An Interesting and Heartbreaking Addition to the Debate At Hand: SEXISM! - My bottom line, to him and everyone else: the problem stopped being just the icons when people started defending their usage with extremely problematic words. Stop using the icons, yes, and then come back, because you defended them and you have to fix that mess you made, as well. -

  • [info]justira: Time to discuss racism and humour! aka how about them mildly infamous icons? - The relationship between humour and kyriarchy is... pretty complicated. It's quite easy to fall into a trap here: attempt, with the best intentions, to deride things worthy of derision, and yet in making the joke end up perpetuating those same ills. -

  • vi: Bingo in FF fandom - It isn't this specific instance (Sazh and fried chicken jokes) itself, but that it is part of a larger trend of representing non-white characters in stereotyped ways, and the reaction of white-privileged fans being told that it's Not Cool. -

  • [info]heebee: Anyone else finding the "ironic" fried c - Anyone else finding the "ironic" fried chicken and/or watermelon-themed Sazh Katzroy icons in poor taste? -

Sorry I cannot make a poll, because I am a basic account, but I am going to try to do this again, only with more time. I'm doing popofacork, so that will take care of one fic - though you won't know which one at first!!

So, basically, I need ficlet ideas. There are all short, like no more than 3k, and it makes me happy to do this kind of stuff.

I am going to limit it to Bandom (Panic at the Young Viens, MCR) and Criminal Minds. Some Harry Potter ideas might happen, but you know how that goes. Bandom is the main push here. :D I already have four ideas in specific mind, plus the secret one, so that leaves us with seven more to write!! DDD:

Here are some ideas that I could do!

1. Something from FlowerHouse!Brendon (where Brendon is a sexslave bought for RyanSpencerBrendon! They take care of him and teach him to be human and it's very selfindulgent.)

2. Something from the Lyn-Z is a TOTALLY KICKASS princess chatfic

3. Something from my werewolf verse (expect a link to the one off in my fic journal soon here!)

4. Vampire weemos!

5. DEALERS CHOICE!!

Which is to say, an idea from a fic I've written (outside of Talitha-verse) that you would like to see expanded on. :D? :D? :D? (Example: like a fic about "Looking at You, I'm Home" or "No Season or Clime")

I do ask that there is no Ryan/Spencer or Jon/Brendon, or Frank or Gerard in slash pairings. :()

I hereby impose a limit of three Brendon/Spencer fics.

SO PLEASE HALP? :D?

ETA: The fact that every time a news article pops up on my mail about Adam Lambert, it always says something like "Adam Lambert On His Best Behavior" for X performance on X show. I still don't enjoy Lambert's music, but I would really appreciate the media to stop referring to him like he's a naughty puppy who accidentally peed on the AMA's leg one time and now we have to be careful that he won't do it again.

Nobody expects Madonna or Lady GaGa to be on their best behavior, and their performances are usually as sexually charged as Lambert's was at the AMAs. Of course, young American men find them attractive. Not that the media is catering.
